3 Lies that Rob Teachers of Rest

One of the biggest obstacles that keep educators from getting the rest they need is guilt.

The guilt monster can turn up as a little voice in your head, calling you “lazy” whenever you try to relax.

Or it might whisper “you’re selfish” when you want to say no to a request from a coworker.

The guilt monster may flare up by calling you “uncaring” whenever you’re [finally] not thinking about school.

Below, find the 3 MOST COMMON LIES we may tell ourselves about rest, and the truth that we can reclaim to give ourselves the rest we are entitled to as living, breathing human beings.

3 Lies that Rob Teachers of Rest

I.

Lie: Rest is selfish. Truth: Rest is a human right.

Rest is not selfish because it is arguably the top thing that fills your cup so you can serve others. Withholding rest makes it increasingly difficult to serve those around you. Rest helps you function - like food, water, and air, rest is a human right.

II.

Lie: Rest is lazy. Truth: Rest is a human right.

Consistent rest actually makes us more productive. It improves focus and memory. It boosts creativity. It helps us problem solve in the moment. But more than that, like food, water, and air, rest is a human right.

III.

Lie: Rest shows you don’t care. Truth: Rest is a human right.

Rest shows you care about yourself AS MUCH AS (note: not instead of) your students. But more than that, like food, water, and air, rest is a human right.

2 Quotes from Others

I.

“There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither” - Alan Cohen

II.

“To be really productive it’s as important to rest when we’re tired as it is to work when we’re inspired.” - Martha Beck
