3 Unexpected Things Teachers Can Do For Their Wellness

When talking about wellness, people often think of exercise and nutrition first, but these things actually aren’t at the top of my list when helping educators stay happy and healthy during the school year.

Below, find out what I do prioritize while working with educators in private health coaching.

And if you’re interested in pursuing health coaching for teachers this fall, make sure to apply here (applications close this Monday!).

3 Unexpected Things Teachers Can Do For Their Wellness.

I.

Let go of what you can’t control.

I know this is easier said than done, but reminding yourself of what you can and can’t control can go a long way towards alleviating stress during the school year. We do not have control over other people’s thoughts, feelings, actions or reactions. We only have control over our own. The truth is, we can’t control the behaviors and feelings of all students, 100% of the time. We can’t control big, systemic issues that are largely out of our hands. We can’t control how other people react to the boundaries we know we need to feel our best. The more we let go of the responsibility to control the uncontrollable, the more we can focus on the things that actually are within our control. This is an example of a mindset shift that I help clients practice in private coaching.

II.

Communicate your needs.

Communicating your needs can sound like saying no to an extra task that you know would overwhelm you. It can sound like asking for help on something you’ve never done before. It can sound like telling someone that they did something to upset you, and expressing how they can treat you better next time. Talking about your needs can be intimidating, especially if you hold a conscious or unconscious belief that prioritizing your needs is mean or selfish. It can be tricky, too, if you’re still figuring out what your needs are. Take it one day at a time, ask what you need in stressful situations, and then communicate it with whoever you need to communicate it with. This is another skill that I help clients practice regularly in coaching.

III.

Set up sustainable daily routines.

What we do most days matters when it comes to preventing burnout. That breakneck speed expected or practiced by many teachers is not sustainable long-term. In private coaching, I help clients set up daily routines that feel fulfilling to them, so that you aren’t just trying to survive until your next break. You deserve a life that feels fulfilling and sustainable each and every day, all school year long.
