Why is the summer so important for teacher wellness? Check out the answer in video mode or written below :)
Hello everybody! This is the start of a new series called “Healthy Teacher Quick Tips”, where I give you a quick tip to help you with your wellness that you can apply that same day.
Today we are talking about the importance of summer for teacher wellness, and today’s tip is to use the summer to solidify the habits that you want to continue into the school year.
Let me say that again…
Healthy Teacher Quick Tip #1: Use the summer to solidify the habits that you want to continue into the school year.
I am sharing this tip with you because I learned the hard way what happens when you don’t use the summer to build those healthy habits.
I used to live the summer up (as we all should!). I would travel and plan fun activities and it was great in the moment. BUT I would start the next school year with all the same habits as the year before, and feel just as burnt out by like September.
I don’t want that for you!
Why is the summer so important for habit building?
New habits take a lot of time, energy, and focus to build—and teachers don’t have a lot of that left for themselves during the school year.
The good news is that once a habit is set, it becomes much more automatic—you don’t need a lot of thought or energy to make it happen. Those automatic healthy habits are exactly what we want when the school year gets hectic.
How many new habits should you start over the summer?
I recommend focusing on 3-5 actionable, specific new habits. I also recommend evaluating if you can continue with the habit into the school year before you begin. There’s no use starting a habit of running every day at noon if it could never happen during the school year, ya know?
I’m sure you’ve already got some ideas for habits you would like to start, but in case you don’t I’ve got a solution for you!
This Tuesday I am hosting a free virtual class called “The 5 Healthy Habits for a Rejuvenating Summer”. I will be sharing some of the top habits that I’ve seen help my clients reduce stress and feel more balanced during the school year.
